130818 A bunch of classic and very charitable heroes were smoking out along the open road.

Great bunch of lads, met up with them at Plusha on Day One of their commendable endeavour.Top end here - http://www.realclassic.co.uk/ridesfiles/end_to_end_slowly_part3_2013.htmlThere, heading northwards across the bridge, we spotted Hume and his anonymous little C90 Honda, who'd obviously taken 'Festina Lente' far more seriously than the rest of us. In recognition of this outstanding achievement, there on the north bank of the Spey and with yet another overnight stop planned before John O'Groats, Roger presented Hume with his medal as a fitting reward for his exemplary due diligence in the face of wanton, reckless and feckless haste. Festina Lente. If you've enjoyed this tale of daring do and would like to make a donation for Red Cross week, you can donate via the End 2 End Slowly website: www.e2eslowly.org/#!donate/c1vnr

Cowboy Jack Clement, Hall of Famer, dies aged 82

Cowboy Jack Clement, Hall Of Famer, dies aged 82Sources / LINKS show in REDJack Clement (April 5, 1931 - August 8, 2013)"Cowboy" Jack Clement Montage - CLICK TO ENLARGECountry Music Hall of Famer, died at 82 at his Nashville home. He had suffered from liver cancer.Mr.Jack Henderson Clement became one of the most respected and influential figures in the country music industry. He gained success not only as a songwriter, but also as a studio engineer, producer, recording studio owner, music publisher, and artist. He was known as “Cowboy Jack” in spite of his avowed dislike of horses and his propensity for wearing sneakers and Hawaiian shirts. At Sun Records in Memphis, he was the first to record Jerry Lee Lewis and Roy Orbison. He wrote and produced historic records for best friend Johnny Cash.He schooled studio protégés such as Garth Fundis, Allen Reynolds (Crystal Gayle, Kathy Mattea, Garth Brooks), Jim Rooney, and Mark Howard.A  2013 inductee into CMA’s Country Music Hall of Fame he was the only person ever to produce recordings by members of the Rock and Roll, Country, Jazz, Blues, Bluegrass, Gospel and Polka Halls of Fame. Jack Clement Timeline30's - 40's1931: BornJack Henderson Clement April 5, 1931. A native of Whitehaven, Tennessee, near Memphis, along the famed Highway 61. His father was a church choir director, and his early childhood included repeated exposure to the sounds of Roy Acuff and Wayne Raney, via Memphis radio station WMC.Education: Grade School--Levi Grammar School (from 1937-1945) , High School--Whitehaven High (from 1945-1948) College--Washington Bible College (1951) 1948: Enlisted in the Marines at age 17 and was stationed in the Washington, D.C., area (last two of his four years of service)1950's1951: As a drill team member, he was chosen to be among the few soldiers who officially saluted Princess Elizabeth during her visit to the Capitol. A captured photo later hung in Mr. Clement’s music office.[Apparently, this photo was in LIFE MAGAZINE at the time, and when the British press got a hold of it, they ran it with a caption something like, "Pardon us, your Highness, but your slip is showing"] 1953: While in the Marines, he met the Stonemans, a family whose roots in country music were even deeper than those of the famed Carter Family. He teamed up with Scotty Stoneman. When discharged from service they performed on the radio as Buzz and Jack and the Bayou Boys. Began career as recording artist for Sheraton Records in Boston.1954: Settled temporarily in Memphis and enrolled at Memphis State University (studied English and Literature to 1955) He began playing steel guitar for a local country bandleader, Slim Wallace; the two formed their own record label, Fernwood. 1956: Sun Records owner Sam Phillips heard a Billy Lee Riley song Mr. Clement had produced, he was offered a job as a Sun Records engineer and producer, at $60 a week. His salary eventually rose to $90 a week, on the strength of his work with Lewis, Cash, Orbison, Charlie Rich, Carl Perkins and others. He engineered the famed Presley/Cash/Lewis/Perkins session eventually released as “The Million Dollar Quartet.” He participated in rock’s first great wave.1958: "Ballad of a Teenage Queen" and "Guess Things Happen That Way" both penned by Clement were #1 country and Top Twenty pop hits for Johnny Cash.1959: Sam Phillips “fired” him after a boozy night, but Mr. Clement could have stayed on. He created first publishing company, Jack Music Inc.1960's1960: Moved to Nashville to work as a songwriter and producer for Chet Atkins at RCA. Soon, however, Clement relocated to Beaumont, Texas, where he and producer Bill Hall opened Gulf Coast Recording Studios.1962: He met George Jones in Beaumont and suggested he cut Dickey Lee's "She Thinks I Still Care," a #1 hit for Jones who also hit #3 with Clement's "A Girl I Used to Know".1964: Johnny Cash called him saying he had a dream about a mariachi band playing on a song called “Ring of Fire.” The result was Mr. Clement wound up arranging the unusual horn part on the now-classic, and he played the rhythm guitar part on the record. He acquired his nickname, Cowboy, after a role in a made-up radio show he created with Dickey Lee and songwriter-producer Allen Reynolds.1965: Re-established his production and publishing company, Jack Music. Clement moved back to Nashville and began a lengthy association with singer Charley Pride. He financed a demo session and gave the tape to Chet Atkins, who signed Pride to RCA. Clement produced or co-produced Pride's first thirteen RCA albums.Kris Kristofferson arrived in Nashville on vacation in 1965, wearing an Army uniform. Mr. Clement persuaded Kris Kristofferson (who resigned his military commission) to move to town.1968: Clement had two self-penned songs on Johnny Cash’s epic 1968 “Johnny Cash at Folsom Prison” album: “Dirty Old Egg-Sucking Dog” and “Flushed From the Bathroom of Your Heart.” Aided by money rolling in from the Charlie Pride projects, he decided to engage in some empire building.1970's: Clement expanded his publishing company and opened three Nashville recording studios. He made Dear Dead Delilah, which would wind up to be a tremendous financial bust. Clement established the JMI label, the early home base for country star Don Williams (who later moved to ABC/Dot)1970: He built Jack Clement Recording Studios, he early home base for country star Don Williamsnow known as Sound Emporium and which has been the spot for many hit recordings.1973: He was inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame(along with included Harlan Howard, Don Gibson, Roger Miller and Willie Nelson). He was also inducted into the Rockabilly Hall of Fame and Nashville's Music City Walk of Fame. 1975: He produced Waylon Jennings's classic album "Dreaming My Dreams" and hosted recording sessions for Merle Haggard, Ray Stevens, and Mickey Newbury, as well as Don Williams. Like Williams, Bob McDill ("Amanda") and Allen Reynolds ("Dreaming My Dreams with You") were members of Clement's songwriting stable. Artists who cut songs from Clement's vast publishing catalog ranged from Tammy Wynette to Eric Clapton, Perry Como, and Elvis Presley. 1978: Recorded originally for Sun Records in the 1950s, his album debut surfaced, "All I Want to Do in Life" (Elektra Records 1978), included "When I Dream," a Sandy Mason song Crystal Gayle took to #3 in 1979. Clement sold his studio "Jack’s Tracks", to producer Allen Reynolds."Cowboy" Jack Clement Montage - CLICK TO ENLARGE1980's:Produced records for Johnny Cash as well as tracks for U2's Rattle and Hum (“When Love Comes To Town”), the band's 1988 tribute to American roots music.90's and 2000's:Drew inspiration from young artists Billy Burnette and Shawn Camp. He performed shows during a sold-out residency at the Country Music Hall of Fame. He worked on a movie score with T Bone Burnett.2004: Dualtone Records released the second album of his career, the critically lauded album "Guess Things Happen That Way" (his first album in more than 25-years). A June 2011 fire destroyed his home and he stood safely and sadly outside, wearing an Elvis Presley bathrobe as the "Cowboy Arms". Clement and his companion, Aleene Jackson, were unharmed by the fire. They spent time in other residences while the Cowboy Arms was rebuilt.2013: Clement's musical colleagues and friends (including Kristofferson, Pride, Emmylou Harris, John Prine, Rodney Crowell, Vince Gill) staged a concert in his honour on January 30, 2013, at War Memorial Auditorium  in Nashville. Mr. Clement was in ill health, but he made his way to the stage at night’s end delivering a mini-set that concluded with a version of the Rolling Stones’ “No Expectations”. The show also included video tributes from President Bill Clinton, first lady Michelle Obama, Bono of U2, country star Taylor Swift (at Mr. Clement’s insistence: He loved Taylor Swift) and other dignitaries. The tribute featured speakers including ABC "Nashville" TV co-creator Callie Khouri who spoke about Clement's magical spirit. Nashville's Connie Britton presented an award to Clement. (photo)The CMA announced in April 2013  that Mr.Clement had been elected to the Country Music Hall of Fame. He will be inducted officially on October 27, 2013. Is Bankruptcy the End of Detroit or a New Beginning?

Is Bankruptcy the End of Detroit or a New Beginning?, The scariest thing that Detroiters are facing this morning is not insolvency, debt collectors, or even lame jokes from outsiders, but the uncertainty of what happens to their city next. The city Chapter 9 bankruptcy filing that happened yesterday is unprecedented in size and scope — it lists over 100,000 creditors who are owed something — and no one is entirely sure what it will take to make the city whole again. Even the city's emergency manager, who has drawn up plans to privatize many of the Detroit's essential services and get the financial house in order, can't fully commit to the many options available, not all of them good. There are even rumors floating around that the city could be forced to sell what might be its most valuable asset — the impressive collection owned by the Detroit Institute of Art. While the entire collection (including the original Howdy Doody puppet) could fetch a couple of billion dollars on the open market, residents would be loathe see their best cultural treasures shipped off to the highest bidder. The state ruled earlier that the city has no right to sell them off, but in a moment of crisis like this, almost anything seems possible. There's also the blame game happening right now, which is mostly counterproductive. Everyone has their pet theory about why Detroit failed — unions, corruption, pensions, racism, taxes, "white flight," Democrats, lousy transportation, the '67 riots — but the truth that there is no single cause. And there isn't going to be one single solution either. If someone says “Detroit’s problem is…” & then mention fewer than 7 or 8 factors, they don’t know what they’re talking aboutSo for now, Detroit and the rest of Michigan are left to wonder their future will hold. Some see the bankruptcy as the final death knell of a once great city. Imagining dried up pension funds (the biggest chunk of the debt by far is owed to city retirees); unpaid salaries (the city has promised to pay its bills); and the prospect of answering to the whims of judges and politicians from other towns, must have residents panicked about the city falling even further into a hole. Even Michael Moore, the state's supposed champion of the working class, has surrendered with this stunningly defeatist (and wrong) message.Detroit (1701-2013). Don't cry for us, America. You're next. There are others, however, who see it as the chance to finally halt the city's 30-year slide and start fresh. Plenty of families and companies — including the city's own General Motors — have declared bankruptcy and come out stronger on the other side. Unlike previous attempts to eliminate city debt, the bankruptcy can protect vital services and maybe even stick it to some of the more predatory creditors who have held back citizens in recent years. It's not an ideal situation, but hitting rock bottom might be just what the city needs to get itself right again.Corey Williams, a native of the city who covers it for the Associated Press, summed up the feelings of a lot of people who still love their town, despite all its problems."Detroit is tired and I can't help but think the city is weeping down deep in its tough old bones. I'm crying inside, even while writing the stories and filling pages in Detroit's history. I don't know if wiping away as much as $20 billion in debt through bankruptcy will fix Detroit....... But at least and at last there is a plan. In Detroit's drawn out, decades of failures there is hope."

"Ill Mind of Hopsin 6" by Hopsin

"And it's pitiful, where the fuck they at now?/In they mid-twenties, passed out inside of a crack house/Back when you met 'em I had doubts, they put you on a bad route/And when you needed their help to pick you up they fuckin backed out!/" Today Hopsin released his 6th installment of the "Ill Mind of Hopsin" series. And with each installment, his subject matter gets more and more serious. This one is strictly one topic, no disses, just straight up life experiences spoken from the heart. It seems like a continuation of his track from Gazing At The Moonlight, "Chris Dolmeth", but this one's a lil more serious than the last. The video's clean as fuck, production is tight, and the lyrics and delivery are crazy of course. This shit's deep son! Check it.

On the Topic Of Alfredsson's Departure

At the end of the day, you cannot blame Daniel Alfredsson. The emotion of everything that has happened today with the news that Alfredsson is leaving the Ottawa Senators for the Detroit Red Wings; the thing lost in all of this has to be the idea that with the departure of Alfredsson, they actually need to have someone pick up the pieces for contribution. It's a time for Jason Spezza, Milan Michalek, and the other players to step up their game and hopefully find a way to stay healthy in order to contribute more. Not only that, the void left in the locker room for the Senators is something that won't be as easily replaced as the scoring contribution. For a core of young players, it's a huge hit in trying to turn to someone, but for guys like Erik Karlsson, it will make them grow up a little more and actually learn to become a leader and get the experience by being fed to the fire. Not only that, it'll be a big thing for Paul MacLean to be the motivator that he has shown off to the world with his Jack Adams Trophy campaign this past season.Yet, the biggest sign this signing to Detroit brings is that Alfredsson doesn't believe himself to be the primary contributor to the Ottawa Senators, as he was being called upon to do. Getting up there with age, it just shows that Alfredsson is at the point of his career where he wants to be able to ride shotgun and let the others actually be the superstars of the team and he can lay back and be the secondary scoring and the leader on the ice by example. With this, the Red Wings will get some experience they have lost in the past few years with the retirement of Nicklas Lidstrom, Kris Draper, and the like. Alfredsson's voice is something that's respect around the league and is someone who could teach Henrik Zetterberg how to be a leader off the ice, as well as on. Sure, the teaching of that is often futile, but if Zetterberg is willing to learn a thing or two from Alfredsson; it couldn't hurt to get some pointers here and there.Plus, they get a little bit of consistency out of Alfredsson, who won't bring big goals or assists; but all of his points are very timely and will add more punch to the second power play unit, especially on a big one-timer chance. While it may not completely fill the void and drop-off from Zetterberg and Pavel Datsyuk's points contribution; Alfredsson could give a shot in the arm to the top-six guys. Most importantly is what the fans of the Senators will do when they meet their new division rival Red Wings this season. They will be mad, regardless of what Alfredsson says his reasons are for leaving Ottawa. The wounds of this signing is going to be hard to make heal with time or at all. I'm sure long after Alfredsson has retired, he will be welcomed back by the Ottawa faithful as Mr. Senator-- but for now, there's bitterness, tears, and a lost feeling trying to find out what went wrong between the Sens and Alfie.

Islamists and Jihadis: A Cancer on the Face of the World

Islamists and Jihadis: A Cancer on the Face of the World http://www.gatestoneinstitute.org/3784/islamists-jihadis by Kamel DaoudJune 24, 2013 at 3:00 am Print Send Comment RSS Share Share The salafist man finds it unbelievable that there are people who do not believe the same way he does. He considers this difference as a personal attack. He is astonished that the whole world is not Muslim and he is going to correct [this mistake].The following op-ed was originally published in French in the Algerian newspaper Le Quotidien d'Oran. Translated by Anna Mahjar-Barducci It is not going to stop, [instead] it keeps on reproducing itself in the cities of the Sahara, it becomes vocal and shouts, then kills, taking you by the throat; it destroys giant Buddhas and [people's] bodies and advances like a desert that dries out even the desert itself: salafism/Islamism/fundamentalism, the cancer on the face of the world and on the will to live. All this no longer obeys the ancient forms of the threat: it is no longer a brigade, a group or a front, but a sort of tumor: it may swell under your armpit or on the streets of London. It kills; we then arrest the killer, but we do not stop the disease. We kill the hostage taker, but not the malignant cell. And it has a banner, a sort of skein of darkness, that is waved in the dry and dead wind of a theological infinity. It is everywhere and it is like barbed wire running over your bare skin. Everywhere, as the living dead himself explains: "It is Allah who says that Sharia should be implemented." And "in Islam there is no democracy, for that would mean that people have the right to challenge Allah and to decide in His stead. This is inadmissible and one will not allow this heresy, may God protect us." Who is speaking? A dead cell, convinced that God spoke to it and that it has the right to infect a world that shines and replace it with a world that kills. Unbelievable: at first, one might think that Islamism is an ideology, a policy or a line of thought. This is a simplistic point of view -- political orthodoxy, conventional wisdom and ideas. No, we must also see through the prism on biology: It is a disease, which intends to devour the world, it is not an issue of faith and belief. A salafist man is not looking for God, but in the dark, he is after your throat. He believes that the whole world must believe the way he does and, if it does not, it is the whole world that is 'sick' and must be brought back to the right path. By persuasion or by blood. The salafist man finds it unbelievable that there are people who do not think the same way he does! He considers this difference as a personal attack. He is astonished that the whole world is not Muslim and he is going to correct this. First of all, we must stop talking about ideas: It is a disease like the Plague in the Middle Ages. It is the disease of the century, but without poetry. It is a pathology against civilization. This disease will stop only when the whole world will be a total tumor. This is what is threatening the future and frightens people down to their bowels. What eventually arrives are wars, massacres and slaughters against our children, who will have to fight a war of survival against the black flag, which is not the symbol of a "nation," but the end of nations and of the earth. For [the Islamists] all look alike, as, in general, corpses do: from Yemen to Mauritania, from London to Australia. Same hirsute look, same crazed eyes, same surreal sales pitch, same signs and anger and same convulsions of the body inhabited by a demon made of ink and verses. And all this proceeds from south to north, from your neighbors towards you. This accursed Salafi flag everywhere wants men to prostrate themselves, and explains what is right, that God has spoken, that the earth is the booty of heaven. A terrible and murderous world which intends to kill us all: us, our children, light, art, hope, freedom and the dignity of questioning. This is not a pessimistic view, just a glimpse of what is coming: salafism/Islamism/jihadism is a disease that wants to destroy the world. We must see it and treat it as such. The black flag is the abscess under the armpit of the those who are plague-ridden. A sign of death. London: City of Resurrections and other Machen wisdom

You can never have too many London quotes by Arthur Machen (1863-1947), he had a great appreciation for the mysteries to be found in wandering the streets of the city. Here's a few favourites:'Villiers had emerged from his restaurant after an excellent dinner of many courses, assisted by an ingratiating little flask of Chianti, and, in that frame of mind which was with him almost chronic, had delayed a moment by the door, peering round in the dimly-lighted street in search of those mysterious incidents and persons with which the streets of London teem in every quarter and every hour.  Villiers prided himself as a practised explorer of such obscure mazes and byways of London life, and in this unprofitable pursuit he displayed an assiduity which was worthy of more serious employment.  Thus he stood by the lamp-post surveying the passers-by with undisguised curiosity, and with that gravity known only to the systematic diner, had just enunciated in his mind the formula:  “London has been called the city of encounters; it is more than that, it is the city of Resurrections" (The Great God Pan, 1894).'I searched for Mrs. Beaumont in the dark waters of the life of London... assuming, as I had to assume, that her record was not of the cleanest, it would be pretty certain that at some previous time she must have moved in circles not quite so refined as her present ones. If you see mud at the top of a stream, you may be sure that it was once at the bottom. I went to the bottom. I have always been fond of diving into Queer Street for my amusement, and I found my knowledge of that locality and its inhabitants very useful' (The Great God Pan, 1894).'London in September is hard to leave. Doré could not have designed anything more wonderful and mystic than Oxford Street as I saw it the other evening; the sunset flaming, the blue haze transmuting the plain street into a road 'far in the spiritual city'' (The Shining Pyramid, 1895)'And it is utterly true that he who cannot find wonder, mystery, awe, the sense of a new world and an undiscovered realm in the places by the Gray's Inn Road will never find those secrets elsewhere, not in the heart of Africa, not in the fabled cities of Tibet. 'The matter of our work is everywhere present', wrote the old alchemists, and that is the truth. All the wonders lie within a stone's throw of King's Cross Station" (Things Near and Far, 1923)OK I would have preferred 'All the wonders lie within a stone's throw of New Cross station' but the same principle applies!See also: Arthur Machen: South London 'Behind the Scenes of the Universe'
