Getaway this summer with Bale, Rooney and Suarez.... Volume 3 - Rooney

It is that time of the year when the gossip columns go into overdrive. No longer do you have to scroll to page 338 on Ceefax to find the most bizarre rumours from questionable sources, they are all over the web, print and overheard in the Fox and Hound where the regular who knows “Christopher Samba’s uncle” can tell you about the goings on at Loftus Road.Worryingly for Premier League executives it is three of it’s superstars that will be on the radars of the world’s superpowers this summer as for one reason or another they are being linked away from their current homes.Here we will try to use an iota of common sense to predict the whereabouts of these three players rather than the pure speculation plucked out of thin air by lazy journalists under pressure for the next big scoop.....Wayne Rooney - Manchester UnitedArguably the most naturally talented footballer to grace Ol’ Blighty since a certain Paul Gascoigne, Wayne Rooney has been a superstar of the Premier League since he burst onto the scene with THAT 30 yard curling effort past David Seaman as a raw 16 year old. But Rooney has had his fair share of controversy over the years as has been well documented, a lot of which can be put down to rash decisions both on and off the pitch.Is his latest rash decision is wanting a move away from Old Trafford another rash decision? Is United’s loss someone elses gain? Do we see Wayne and Colleen fitting in with the aristocrats in Monte Carlo, discussing Proust with the Parisians or even being able to order a milkshake in a McDonalds in Madrid?His latest decision to want a move isn’t the first time the short-tempered striker has decided his future doesn’t lie in front of the Stretford End. If you believe what you read he wasn’t far from crossing Manchester ala Tevez back in 2010. A couple of league titles later and plenty of goals, including THAT bicycle kick against Citeh and the red fans forgot that misdemeanor. Time and trophies seem to be the greatest healer.The timing of this particular transfer request is very interesting, especially given the managerial changes happening at Old Trafford with the man who gave Rooney his league debut as the manchild a decade ago, David Moyes. A lot has been written about a libel dispute but common sense dictates that assurances from Moyes to Rooney that he will command a starting spot in his plans would certainly appease the Croxteth lad to some extent.The crunch tie against Real Madrid in the Champions League this year may well have been the tipping point for Rooney. Having been left on the bench in favour of Nani and Welbeck it would seem the self-proclaimed ‘Big Man’ had his nose put out of joint so to speak. Incidentally Nani was one of very few who managed to prove a Ferguson decision wrong later in the piece, ironically with a reckless challenge one would associate with a young Rooney.Previously he could handle Cristiano Ronaldo taking all the plaudits, he played in a different position and Rooney was a completely different player. The introduction of Robin Van Persie, the man who pipped Rooney’s 27 Premier League goals the year before, now meant the 27 year old was not first choice. Especially not first choice when in a two-legged European affair. Think back to Ferguson’s penchant for starting Park Ji-Sung on a big European night.The list of clubs who would be interested is long but the potential list of suitors for both parties, when analyzed, is fairly short. Let’s see how quickly we can debunk every club linked with him in a couple of short paragraphs...Arsenal - It has to be seen as a major step back going to The Gunners. 16 points in the league, 9 trophies at United since Arsenal’s last one. Although Gazidis has come out to the media saying they have major money to spend this is something Arsenal fans have heard before. Fans would also argue there isn’t much previous of breaking a wage structure to pay a player 2 and a half times their highest paid player neither.Chelsea - The Blues need an out and out striker to play in front of their young and quite brilliant threesome. Edinson Cavani looks like the man that will fulfil that role. The man who plays the second striker role has been the player of the year for the past two seasons and is an absolute genius. Juan Mata.PSG - The best bet if he is to leave Manchester. Rooney and his family would be able to live a lower profile life with the media, he could match if not raise his pay packet and would form a technically brilliant strike partnership with Zlatan Ibrahimovic, one which would certainly please his sponsors. That said you just get that feeling, an inkling, that Rooney wouldn’t want to take his family so far away from his roots in Liverpool and moreover you get the feeling that this particular Scouser isn’t about to join Ligue 1 and start quoting Nietzsche in a dodgy french accent.So this obviously means Wayne Rooney is staying at Manchester United.... you heard it here first. Although logic isn’t prevalent in the modern day game, staying is quite clearly the obvious choice. He has been with United and been a star for the past 8 years, he has won countless trophies and developed as a footballer. This development that you can see continuing at Old Trafford, more than likely in a deeper role in the midfield. If Giggs and Scholes can play in deeper roles in their late 30s and 40s, then a 27 year old Rooney, with a passing technique, eye for goal and work rate of the highest order can surely be moulded into a midfielder with bounds that only his desire defines.Now Rooney has made some questionable and impulsive choices in his lifetime. Whether it be stamping on Montegrans, an awful follicular unit transplantation or his idea of a good massage parlour. All these decisions, admittedly less frequent these days, can be forgiven every time he wields that majestic right boot and clips a crossfield, grass snipping ball across the Old Trafford turf or scores an important wonder goal. Whether they admit it or not Manchester United need Wayne Rooney and Wayne Rooney needs Manchester United and it won’t be long until they are playing happy families all over again.

Big 3 help Heat even NBA Finals with Spurs

SAN ANTONIO (AP) — LeBron James scored 33 points while playing with the aggression and ferocity that everyone expects of the four-time MVP, leading the Miami Heat to a 109-93 victory over the San Antonio Spurs on Thursday night that evened the NBA Finals at two games apiece.James also had 11 rebounds and four assists and finally got some much-needed help from his struggling All-Star teammates. Dwyane Wade scored 32 points, Chris Bosh had 20 points and 13 rebounds and the defending champions made sure the series will head back to South Beach.Tony Parker had 15 points and nine assists while playing through a sore right hamstring for the Spurs, who were trying to move one step closer to their fifth championship.Game 5 in the best-of-seven series is Sunday night in San Antonio.Ray Allen scored 14 points for the Heat. Miami had 50 points in the paint after managing 32 in a 36-point loss in Game 3.Tim Duncan scored 20 points, and Kawhi Leonard added 12 points and seven rebounds for the Spurs, who turned the ball over 19 times. After setting a finals record with 16 3-pointers in Game 3, San Antonio was 8 for 16.James was an abysmal 7 for 21 for 15 points in Game 3, and he promised to be better in Game 4. He delivered on that the only way he knows how, hitting 15 of 25 shots and putting the team on his shoulders to set the tone early.Every time James snatched a Spurs miss off the glass he thundered up the court, attacking the back-pedaling defense for easy layups that simply haven't been there for him this series.He made six of his first seven shots, controlling the tempo and responding when the Spurs threatened to run away with the game in the first six minutes.Parker strained his right hamstring during Game 3, leaving many in San Antonio to fear that the big step forward they made with their win in Game 3 came at a hefty price. But Parker deemed himself "ready to go" at the team's morning shootaround and looked fine, save for a quick trip to the locker room in the fourth quarter.All the old Parker tricks were there in the first quarter — a pull-up jumper to open the game, a driving layup and then another off the pick-and-roll. Leonard then buried a 3-pointer to give the Spurs a 15-5 lead early in the game.Then James made the move the Heat have been waiting for all series.He took the ball coast-to-coast on two straight possessions during run that tied it at 19. James then hit two mid-range jumpers — an area that has been a struggle for him — to cap the 14-2 surge and give Miami a 25-21 lead.In an unusual move, Heat coach Erik Spoelstra decided to shuffle the starting lineup in the middle of a series. He inserted the sharp-shooting Mike Miller for big man Udonis Haslem in an effort to create more room for James and Wade to penetrate to the rim.Miller was 9 for 10 on 3-pointers in his first three games of the finals, but was scoreless in the game.Wade was averaging 2.7 points in the second half in the finals, but had eight in the third quarter of Game 4.Wade then finished off the Spurs with a flurry of eight straight Heat points followed by an assist to Bosh for a 94-83 lead with seven minutes to play. The Heat's Big Three scored all but three points for Miami in the fourth.If there was a common theme in the first three games, it was the curiously meek performance from James. He entered this series after perhaps the best season of his career, a versatile and efficient freight train that had taken the league and made it his own.He was out to show just how far he'd come from 2007, when the Spurs dismantled his Cleveland Cavaliers in the finals and exposed the rising star as a player who could be neutralized if he was forced to settle for jump shots. James promised that he would not be so easily contained this time around, and .565 shooting percentage during the regular season, including .406 on 3-pointers, seemed to support that theory.But the Spurs had done to him in these finals exactly what they did to him six years ago. They've clogged the paint with two big men — Duncan and Tiago Splitter — and surrounded him on the perimeter with a pack of hungry young wings led by Leonard and Green.The results had been unlike anything the league has grown used to seeing from its biggest star. James entered Game 4 averaged 16.7 points on 38.9 percent shooting. He was just 3 for 13 from 3-point range in the first three games, and even more startling, only had six free throw attempts."I'm putting all the pressure on my chest, on my shoulders to come through for our team," James said. "That's the way it is."It would be hard to find much higher stakes than Game 4 for the Heat.
