Ward 4 - You Decide

From all indications it seems that the race for Alderman Ward 4 is close.  Here's a post that may help you decide who to vote for.  There are 3 candidates but only 2 contenders, Kayce Williams and incumbent Allen Hall. Kayce Williams:Spring Hill Little League President and former Treasurer-Very dedicated to the Little League.  Would she have the time to juggle 2 time consuming civic responsibilities?  Which one is the higher priority, SHLL President or Alderman Ward 4?CFO of Firstrate, Inc and AIM LLC- Not sure what Firstrate is and can't find any internet resources.Secretary of the Spring Hill Parks and Recreation Commission-This one's a bit baffling.  She states in  the alderman Q&A's that Parks and Rec. is her passion and a huge priority but when a resolution to support the McCutcheon Greenway was voted on by the Commission she sits on she abstained and sited property owner rights.  This is exactly what Mayor Dinwiddie said in the Planning Commission meeting as they voted to approve a plat without the greenway included.  This greenway project has been a high priority for quite sometime involving both the Town of Thompson's Station and SH. Could her association with developer Donnie Cameron have anything to do with it?  Speaking of Cameron, he was spotted around the city putting up large campaign signs for her.  From what I understand one does not want to beholden to Mr. Cameron, he will expect payback of some sort.  Ms. Williams' treasurer is Leigh Gillig who happens to be Donnie Cameron's sole real estate agent for Autumn Ridge.  Ms. Gillig was Mayor Dinwiddie's treasurer when he ran for Mayor 4 years ago.  Ms. Gillig also donated $500 to the Mayoral campaign of Rick Graham.   To further prove my point about her ties to developers, as I was canvassing a neighborhood I came across several empty lots with her campaign signs.  Empty residential lots with campaign signs, hmmm!Allen Hall:Transportation Advisory Committee Chairman- This committee was formed at the end of 2011.  This committee worked diligently to create a transportation Capital Improvement Plan which prioritizes transportation projects within the City.  After several years of neglect by Mayor Dinwiddie, the TAC works closely with the Nashville Area MPO, which recommends transportation projects to TDOT.   Mr. Hall and the other members (Duda and Wurth) of this committee all volunteered to serve on the TAC.Website Sterring Committee Chairman-The difference in what the website looked like 4 months ago to today is daylight and dark.  Job well done.Board of Zoning Appeals- This board has the power to hear and decide appeals and requests regarding the City's Zoning Ordinance.  Mr. Hall was the only member to vote against special treatment for Wal-Mart when they requested smaller parking spaces.  Technology Upgrades- Mr. Hall took on the project to make all BOMA meeting packets electronic.  These packets were delivered to each BOMA member via a 3 ring binder with supporting documentation for each ordinance or resolution.  He trained City staff on how to convert hard copy documents into a digital format to be shared by the BOMA.  This also cut down the costs of having police officers hand deliver all the packets to the BOMA members homes.  He also helped the Police Department save thousands of dollars on the new PD 911 Dispatch System.  By being tech savvy he was able to go through the proposal and cut out unnecessary equipment and also identified additional equipment that was necessary.   Transparency- Mr. Hall did not sign a confidentiality non-disclosure document related to Festival Tennessee.  Related to the new website, meeting minutes are now available that include the voting record of the BOMA.  He has stated that one of his goals is to provide the citizens with an easier mechanism to view those voting records via the new website.Through this campaign cycle I've heard some good things about Ms. Williams.  She seems nice and personable but her associations with specific developers and specific realtors are suspect. The choice is easy for me, Allen Hall is a proven leader and diligent servant for the citizens of Spring Hill.

C’s Avoid Sweep as Knicks Comeback Falls Short in OT

AP Photo/Elise AmendolaBy Kenneth Teape (@teapester725)Sunday, April 28th, 2013Game 4 Post Game RecapFinal Score: New York Knicks: 90 Boston Celtics: 97The Knicks once again spotted the Celtics a first half to forget but unlike Game 1 and 2 they were not able to finish the comeback this time around.  The Celtics went up by as many as 20 points but once again imploded in the second half, giving the Knicks an opportunity to get back in the game and even take a lead at the end.  The Knicks struggled to put the ball in the basket throughout the game without Sixth Man of the Year J.R. Smith, who was suspended for the afternoon after a flagrant-2 foul when he elbowed Jason Terry in Game 3.  The Knicks will look to bounce back and close out the series Wednesday night back at Madison Square Garden with Smith back in the lineup.-Positives ·         Raymond Felton was great for the Knicks tonight.  He stepped up huge in the scoring department with the Knicks needing someone to score alongside Carmelo Anthony.  Felton had a monster third quarter to get the Knicks back on track and make the Celtics lead disappear.  Felton scored 16 of his 27 in the third quarter, scoring 10 points in a 17-7 stretch the Knicks went on to end the quarter to cut the Celtics lead to three heading into the fourth.  Felton also gave the Knicks their first lead of the game with a jumper with 1:18 left in the fourth quarter, but the Knicks were unable to hold onto lead.  In addition to the 27 points, Felton finished the game adding four rebounds, three assists and three steals.·         Iman Shumpert also played a big role for the Knicks in their comeback.  Shumpert had five points and six rebounds in the third quarter and added seven more points in the fourth as he saw his minutes increased today with Smith sidelined.  Shumpert also played great defense throughout the afternoon, including a steal and layup in the fourth quarter to tie the game at 74.  Shumpert played as good of defense as a player at the size disadvantage he was matching up with Paul Pierce and Jeff Green throughout the game.  Shumpert finished the game with a double-double, scoring 12 points and grabbing 12 rebounds while adding two blocks and two steals as well.·         Tyson Chandler had quite possibly his strongest game of the season in Game 4.  He grabbed 11 rebounds in 31 minutes of play, adding five points, one assist and one steal.  Chandler has looked a little off after hurting his neck and missing 16 of 20 games heading into the playoffs but looks to be rounding into shape a little more as the series wears on.  He still has his moments where he doesn’t look all the way back but he is definitely improving from Game 1 and 2.-Negatives·         Without Smith coming off the bench there was virtually no production from the second unit of the Knicks.  In a role reversal from the first three games, the Celtics bench outscored the Knicks bench 22-7 as Martin scored four points and Novak scored three.  Without Smith the Knicks relied heavily on the starting unit to provide all of the scoring; Smith was sorely missed this afternoon.·         Anthony had another big scoring night getting 36 points, but it was not an easy 36 by any means.  He shot 10 of 35 from the field but did make 16 of 20 foul shots, missing two crucial free throws in the fourth quarter with the game tied.  Statistically though, Anthony was the worst player on the court today, ending with a -10; the Knicks made their run in the third quarter with him on the bench behind the play of Felton.  Anthony also turned the ball over seven times, looking almost disinterested at times throughout the game and not playing with the same edge he had in the first three games of the series and down the stretch of the regular season.  Everyone has a bad shooting day once in a while and could not have come at a better time as the Knicks entered up 3-0. ·         The first half was as bad as the Knicks have played at any point of the season, looking like they did during the disastrous west coast trip in March.  They turned the ball over 12 times, more than they did per full game in the regular season, and could not hit water if they fell out of a boat in the ocean let alone put the ball in the basket.  The Knicks scored only 35 points in the first half and did not look ready at the start of the game.·         The shooting for the Knicks was rough throughout the afternoon, as they shot 34.4 percent going 31 of 90 from the field.  The three point shooting was not much better, as they shot seven of 30 for 23.3 percent.  The Knicks will need better efficiency in Game 5 to close out the series and finish off the Celtics.

Bears face elimination

A lot of times in sports you see teams fighting for the playoffs make unexpected runs in the postseason after barely getting into the playoffs.  Generally, you always hear the team say its because they have basically been playing in playoff like games for a while, just to get into the playoffs. And it makes sense. But none of the teams currently still alive for a playoff spot in the AHL's Eastern Conference can make that claim.  The Bears have gone a combined 3-5-0-0 in their last eight, winning one out of three the past two weekends and only one so far this one.Last night Hershey actually could have clinched a playoff spot by winning.  Instead they dropped a 4-2 game to the 4th place Binghamton Senators.Fortunately for the Bears neither of the other teams want in either.  Connecticut entered the weekend with 2 games and owning the main tiebreaker over both Norfolk and Hershey.  As it turns out they only needed one win.  Instead they lost both to go along with the previous 4.  6 straight loses have come after an 8-2 run.But they still have a shot.  If both Hershey and Norfolk lose today...the Whale get the 8 seed.Norfolk was playing some good hockey until this weekend.  They had won 8 of 10 entering last Sunday's game against Providence and looked to be the team to beat amongst the 4 teams fighting for two spots entering the weekend.Back to back loses to Syracuse and Albany, and just 1 goal scored in the two games, leaves them in a world of hurt as they make the trip to Providence to play the AHL's best and hottest team as they have locked up the #1 overall seed and have won 8 straight games.Norfolk can still get it in with a win and a Hershey loss or an overtime/shootout loss accompanied by a Bears regulation loss. Now we come to our Hershey Bears. It's quite simple really.  Win and your in, lose and your done.  The only way the Bears can lose and get in is if its in overtime or a shootout and even then they would need Norfolk to lose too.The good news here is that Hershey doesn't NEED help.  If they take care of business against a surging Manchester team they will be playing next weekend. As a player it has to be nice to have something so cut and dry.  Win...in.  Done. The bad news is the Bears get Manchester.  I mean, it could be worse, they could be playing Providence, but the Monarchs are the AHL's second hottest team having won 6 in a row.  That includes a 4-3 win over Hershey last Saturday night. The Bears and Monarchs have played 3 times so far with the Monarchs winning 2, both in Manchester.  The lone Hershey win was back in February at Giant Center by a score of 2-1.On March 23 the Bears jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first 25 minutes only to see the Monarchs score 5 straight in the next 30 minutes of play before finishing up at 6-4.  Last Saturday looked like it might go the other way as the Bears let Manchester jump out to a 3-0 lead in the first 10 minutes before scoring a couple in the second on their way to a 4-3 loss. If the Bears can manage to win their 36th game of the season, they will make the playoffs. If they can't, then they will have finished the season on a 3-6 stretch that saw 3 consecutive 1-2 weekends. Not the way I would want it to end, that's for sure. It's going to be a sold out Giant Center tonight and is surely going to be loud.  Norfolk plays at 3 so before the 2nd period Hershey should at least know that outcome, but it really doesn't matter. Without a win, the Bears are likely done.LET'S GO BEARS!!!!

What are the Cowboys Doing?

When you search through the ranks of the NFL teams drafting this weekend, one team stands alone: the Dallas Cowboys. In the 1st round they reached for center Travis Frederick. Don't get me wrong, Frederick is a solid center. However, his positional value does not justify a first round pick. The Cowboys did fill a need with Frederick, but at a high cost. Safeties Matt Elam and John Cyprien were still on the board, as was cornerback Jamar Taylor. In the end, I can live with Frederick. Let's just hope the ends justify the means.Next, the Cowboys selected Gavin Escobar, a TE from San Diego State. Why? Jason Witten may be getting older, but he still is the one of the most talented and consistent TE's in the league. I don't see Escobar overtaking Witten anytime soon, so I guess we'll see more two TE sets in Dallas. Players that could have helped the defense like Jonathan Hankins or D.J. Swearinger were all taken in the later portion of the 2nd round. Some other offensive skill players available were RB's Eddie Lacy and Montee Ball. Both players would have helped Dallas' ground game which has struggled with injuries. The running game also takes pressure off of your latest overly paid QB in Tony Romo. But what do I know? I'm just a draft nut. I could never make better picks than the high and mighty Jerry Jones. In the 3rd round, the Cowboys selected Terrance Williams, a wide receiver from Baylor. This one makes a little more sense than it does on paper. Miles Austin is constantly injured, and could become too much of a liability to keep around. Williams is good value here, but short term, people will question it. The worst part of this pick is that they took Terrance Williams over Keenan Allen. While Allen may have some lingering injury concerns, his upside his huge. Terrance Williams is somewhat limited in underneath throws, something the Cowboys have to do if they cannot run the ball. Terron Armstead and Dallas Thomas were on the board and could have filled the shoes of Doug Free. I think Williams will become a good player in this league, but immediately, the Cowboys should have protected Romo up front first. The Cowboys also selected J.J. Wilcox, a safety from Georgia Southern. I have no problems with the pick of a safety, it just should have been done earlier though. The Cowboys can still salvage this draft class on Day 3. However, I don't see any GM's worth taking with a 4th round pick. Jerry Jones need to hand the reigns over to anybody else to make the picks. Maybe I'm wrong; maybe all of these picks make perfect sense when the season starts. But if the Cowboys don't make the playoffs, don't blame Tony Romo (unless he throws 5 picks in a key game). All of the blame can be placed squarely on Jerry Jones, unfortunately he's not going anywhere.

Lemme 'Splain....the must have pick

Hi all,The first installment for the season contains a bit of sarcasm, but may provide a bit of funny prophecy as well....with the (whatever mid-round pick) in the NFL draft, the Dallas Cowboys select.....Landry Jones, QB, Oklahoma!Just think about it.  Romo will not last forever.  And Kyle Orton, however serviceable a QB he may be as a back up, is not someone you would hang a franchise tag on.  The only "fitting" QB for the 'Boys is someone who has the first name the same as the last name of your most decorated coach in franchise history, and the same last name as your overbearing, fly by the seat of your pants, plastic faced owner.Yes, this sounds like a pick drawn up from the depths of the Bros Grimm scariest tales that never made it to print.  But the likelihood that this pick could become a reality is tangible.  After all, Landry Jones was a projected first rounder to some if he had chosen to leave school last year.  His team was doing well, his stats were good.  I even think he was in some circles of Heisman talk at one point of another two years ago.  Has he just had a bad year, like Barkley, or was his good year the outlier in his statistical resume?Truth be told, his stats were really no different between the years, nor were his team's win-loss record.  I think his publicity just couldn't keep up with the expectations thrown at QBs this year due to the outrageous year that Luck and RG3 had the year prior.  I actually think he would be worth a look should he slide to the 4th rnd.Lemme Sum Up!  If there was a time to get a decent QB in the mid rounds, it's this years draft.  And for the Cowboys, it only makes sense that if you do draft one, he has that name.  Landry Jones. Al Neuharth, 1924-2013

From the Los Angeles Times, "Al Neuharth dies at 89; newspaper mogul created USA Today":USA Today was a different kind of newspaper, designed for a generation of readers raised on television who lacked the time and inclination to read lengthy stories. A bold retort to the gray pages of traditional newspapers, it had color photographs, eye-catching graphics and bite-sizestories with paragraphs set off by bullets. Organized into four distinct sections, it featured a brightly hued full-page weather map and catered to sports fans with a mass of game results and other statistics.Neuharth, who aimed to capture an increasingly mobile generation of readers desiring an easy-to-digest format when they were at home or on the road, dubbed it "The Nation's Newspaper.""Our audience will be the whole damned country, but we think we can attract a slice of 4 or 5 percent of the more affluent, better-educated people over most areas of the country," Neuharth predicted in a 1982 interview with the Miami Herald. "We won't compete locally. We will be a second buy."Critics, however, derided the paper as gimmicky and "junk food journalism." "McPaper" became a favorite put-down by traditional journalists appalled by its emphasis on brief, breezy stories. Newsweek poked fun at its founder as "the man who shortened the attention spans of millions of Americans."It lost money for the first five years. But by its fifth anniversary in 1987, revenues had begun to rise and critics began to change their tune, with stories in other newspapers describing USA Today as innovative, even revolutionary.By the early 1990s, major dailies, including the Los Angeles Times and the New York Times, were redesigning their pages to be more reader-friendly, adding color, snappy graphics and stories that read more quickly.RTWT.An interesting guy.

Assploding Leftists Now Denounce Speculation on 'Demography' and 'Motivation' of Boston Terrorists

Police: 'It's a proud day to be a Boston police officer'

Police: 'It's a proud day to be a Boston police officer', In an "extraordinary collaboration" between local, state, and federal officials, -- Dzhokar Tsarnaev -- aka "Suspect #2" -- was taken into custody this evening. It began when a diligent citizen -- acting on instructions by police to stay inside all day -- ventured outside from his home, once police allowed citizens to emerge. Taking officials' warning of "vigilance" seriously, the citizen -- upon noticing a young male inside a boat in his backyard -- notified authorities immediately. Officials set up a perimeter around the neighborhood, and worked swiftly to apprehend him.Authorities say 19-year-old Dzhokar Tsarnaev is currently in "serious condition" at a local hospital. In an almost-live setting played out online and on-camera, FBI agents, officials with the Joint Terrorism Task Force (JTTF), state, and local police apprehended the 19-year-old United States Citizen they say worked with his now-deceased brother to put into motion the Boston Marathon bombings.Just moments after Dzhokar Tsarnaev was apprehended -- alive -- by authorities, a voice came across a Boston scanner feed proclaiming,We got him. It's a proud day to be a Boston police officer."Twenty-six-year-old Tamerlan Tsaraev (now deceased), and his younger broughter, Dzhokar Tsarnaev, (now in custody) are believed to have acted alone in the bombings which took place at the Boston Marathon Monday afternoon. Both are/were residents of Massachusetts: Tamerlan Tsaraev was a legal permanent resident and Dzhokar Tsaraev is a naturalized U.S. citizen.Tamerlan Tsarnaev, age 26, was previously designated as Suspect 1, wearing a black hat. Dzhokar A. Tsarnaev, age 19, was designated as Suspect 2, wearing a white hat. Both were born in Kyrgyzstan. The Federal Bureau of Investigation made an unprecedented move Thursday when they released photos of the brothers to the general public, acknowledging their "desperation" for help in apprehending the Tsaraev brothers.Based on information obtained by federal authorities, it was determined that Tamerlan Tsarnaev was a follower of radical Islam and a strong believer, and that he had changed drastically since 2010 as he prepared to leave the United States for travel to the country’s region to join unspecified underground groups.More information will released as it becomes available.

The title in question is highly topical, and the authors -- Pieter Callens and Sam Granata -- can be congratulated on the speed with which they have put it together.  As the publishers explain:"The long-awaited European Unitary Patent and Unified Patent Court will soon become a reality. Companies, research institutions, and individuals will be able to obtain not only a patent title with immediate effect in 25 EU Member States, but also a court decision on (for example) infringement or validity of a European or Unitary patent with effect in the participating Member States. Everybody involved in European patenting will find enormously welcome guidance in this extraordinary book. Written by two outstanding intellectual property experts – one being a lawyer who had a hand in the development of the unitary patent and the other being a reputed Belgian intellectual property judge – it describes in detail all the provisions regarding the new patent and the new court, explaining their rationales and the processes that led to them. Although the Rules of Procedure of the Unified Patent Court still need to be finalized and adopted by the Court, the authors already unravel the proposed Draft Rules of Procedure. The book uses flowcharts [these being contained in a 40-page supplement] as well as plain words to represent each procedural stage of the Draft Rules of Procedure. In this way, a practitioner can focus on each distinct stage as required, while also gaining a comprehensive overview of the proceedings. The complex language issues arising throughout the proceedings are analysed in detail in a supplementary part. For its deeply informed insights into the expected practical functioning of this revolutionary new patent and litigation system, this work is a peerless contribution that will ensure the most effective practice as this new regime begins. For legal scholars, the book offers the opportunity to analyse, criticize, elaborate, and where necessary improve the current Draft Rules of Procedure of the Unified Patent Court before they are finalized, and advise the governments of the participating Member States on how to implement the new court system in their country".The book opens with an historical introduction and a little bit about how Belgium broke the deadlock -- something for which the tiny Kingdom will either be blessed or execrated in years to come -- and then goes on to provide an extensive analysis of the new scheme.  The bit that covers the draft Rules owes much to the contribution to Willem Hoyng, as the authors acknowledge.I have no doubt that a second edition is already under preparation, subject to anything that the Court of Justice of the European Union might have to say about the legal basis for the EU's new patent regime, that is.Bibliographic data: hardback with paperback supplement.
