Seven Leadership Tips From Breaking Bads Vince Gilligan

Vince Gilligan is to nice as Lindsay Lohan is to crazy.

That s the kind of analogy that surfaces in every discussion about the showrunner of Breaking Bad which premieres its final eight episode run tonight. And that happy talk sells Gilligan and the show he created short.

Sure there s more than a grain of truth to this stereotype. Compared to television s other often prickly auteurs David Chase of the Sopranos David Simon of The Wire and Matt Weiner of Mad Men Gilligan is easy going. His go to adjective in describing someone he s fond of is sweet.

Most days it s just easier to be nice to people Gilligan admits and it bears more fruit even if I m not feeling like it.

Nice might get you a meeting but it doesn t create a show that must be included in any serious discussion about the best shows in television history. How exactly did Gilligan manage to take Walter White from Mr. Chips to Scarface Here s a look at the tactics and strategies that Gilligan used to morph an improbably dark idea into the greatness that is Breaking Bad.

(This is spoiler free about the current season until the freshly appended closing paragraphs which recap episode 509.)

Ignore Your Critics That is the single worst idea for a television series I ve ever heard in my life. That s the assessment of Michael Lynton CEO of Sony Entertainment when two of his production executives explained the concept for Breaking Bad. Without the benefit of hindsight that reaction isn t at all surprising. Cancer. Meth. Mr. Chips. Scarface. Breaking Bad makes The Sopranos seem like Everybody Loves Raymond. And in addition unbeknownst to Gilligan another show with a more palatable spin on the theme Weeds featuring Mary Louise Parker as a pot dealing suburban mom was already in production while he was trying to get Breaking Bad off the ground.

But ultimately none of that mattered. Lacking a better idea Gilligan soldiered on and landed a production deal with Sony Lynton s comment notwithstanding and a home at AMC which was attempting to establish itself as a force in original programming and thus open to taking a chance on a radical show.

Cast Against Type How do you cast a character like Walter White You find an actor who does dark maybe Kevin Spacey or John Malkovich or the best clone you can afford. What did Gilligan do He gave the part of Walter White to a guy best known as as a beleaguered dad on a modestly successful sitcom.

But Gilligan remembered Bryan Cranston not only from Malcolm in the Middle but from an X Files episode in which he pulled off the feat of making a racist seem empathetic. This gutsy decision made TV history.

Gilligan did it again a couple seasons later casting the normally outgoing Giancarlo Esposito he played Buggin Out in Spike Lee s Do the Right Thing as the reserved even repressed drug kingpin Gustavo Fring. In the episode Boxcutter Esposito is on screen for 10 menacing minutes and utters only five words Well Get back to work

Esposito considers that scene the crowning achievement of his distinguished acting career.

Second Guess Yourself If Gilligan refused to rethink his decisions Breaking Bad could be a very different and a far worse show. Jesse Pinkman played by Aaron Paul was originally supposed to die late in season one. In Gilligan s initial draft Jesse was little more a plot device providing Walt with a way into the meth business and a reason to feel guilty when he gets killed off.

But Gilligan instantly recognized the abundant chemistry between Paul and Bryan Cranston and he made Paul into the show s moral compass.

This change of heart also provided Bryan Cranston an inveterate practical joker with innumerable opportunities to yank his co star s chain.

   Coach Mike Tomlin addressed the media following the conditioning test at Steelers Training Camp.   COACH MIKE TOMLIN: Needless to say it was great to get started, to see everybody and start this process of team-building for 2013. Good, productive run test. I like the overall level of conditioning and readiness of the men. We do have four players that we’re going to place on the P.U.P. (Physically Unable to Perform) List. Obviously, they’re players who have pre-existing circumstances that you know about. Heath Miller is still recovering from his knee injury. Same thing could be said for David Johnson, Sean Spence, and the latest addition is Alameda Ta’amu, who has a hamstring issue that is going to have him out a number of days. Therefore, he’ll be the fourth player added to the list of three players with known existing injuries. I don’t have any prognosis in terms of their availability or even when we’ll start the process of considering those players. We’ll kind of take it day-by-day and watch and monitor their progress. But all others are ready to go. We’re excited to get started on good, even footing. We look forward to continuing with this development process.   DID ANYBODY NOT RUN? Other than the guys that I mentioned, no, we had good participation.   IS MIKE ADAMS OK THEN? Yes, he has full clearance.    RE: BEN’S KNEE: He has a little bit of discomfort but that is not going to stop him. This position is not one that has a great deal of running. It is less of an issue for us and more of a personal issue for him, but he will be fine.    I SAW MARCUS GILBERT BENDING OVER, IS HE OK? I didn’t see that. It must have been after the test was over, because he completed his test successfully.    SEAN SPENCE SAID HE FELT COMFORTABLE WITH WHERE HE WAS AT AND HE SHOULD RETURN BY MIDSEASON. IS THERE A POSSIBILITY THAT YOU WOULD LEAVE THE DOOR OPEN FOR HIM? Yeah, I don’t have any problems with those guys and the problems they have. That is where they are because they are not ready to go. We will find them an appropriate time. In regards to Sean Spence, obviously he is a hard working guy and we are excited about his progress.   IS BEN’S DISCOMFORT ANY KIND OF SET BACK? No.   RE: A LOT OF THE GUYS THAT CAME IN TODAY SAID THAT THEY TOOK THE OFF SEASON TRAINING MORE SERIOUSLY: I think you can talk yourself into believing in anything this time of year in regards to optimism. Players came ready in good shape and are ready and excited to move forward. That is really how I look at it. I don’t look at it in comparison to anything else. I’m more singly focused on the opportunity and challenge that is in front of us.    RE: ROETHLISBERGER AND THE RUNNING TEST: I’m not certain. We knew it was in debate on whether he was going to run or not, and I wasn’t really looking. The quarterbacks run, but I was more concerned about looking at the big people. Therefore, I’m more concerned about watching the big people then the quarterbacks.    RE: DRAFTING GUYS AT POSITIONS WHERE YOU LOST STARTERS VERSUS GUYS THAT CAN HELP IMMEDIATELY: Probably not, I would imagine that if you would compare the others you would have similar comparisons. Historically speaking when you lose people, you replace people with capable draft picks, and that is just process. I don’t think that it is any different from that perspective. However, obviously we have some young people that will be given an opportunity to prove that.    WHAT ADVICE DID YOU GIVE C MAURKICE POUNCEY REGARDING THE HAT HE WORE?I’ll keep that between he and I. Obviously, like in all situations where I’m dealing with guys that are unrelated to performance, I think that’s appropriate.   JUST TO CLARIFY, TA’AMU’S INJURY WAS A PRE-EXISTING INJURY. Blacks benefit from Florida ‘Stand Your Ground’ law at disproportionate rate

African Americans benefit from Florida’s “Stand Your Ground” self-defense law at a rate far out of proportion to their presence in the state’s population, despite an assertion by Attorney General Eric Holder that repealing “Stand Your Ground” would help African Americans.

Black Floridians have made about a third of the state’s total “Stand Your Ground” claims in homicide cases, a rate nearly double the black percentage of Florida’s population. The majority of those claims have been successful, a success rate that exceeds that for Florida whites.

Nonetheless, prominent African Americans including Holder and “Ebony and Ivory” singer Stevie Wonder, who has vowed not to perform in the Sunshine State until the law is revoked, have made “Stand Your Ground” a central part of the Trayvon Martin controversy.

Holder, who was pressured by the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) and other progressive groups to open a civil rights case against acquitted neighborhood watchman George Zimmerman in the 2012 shooting death of 17-year-old Martin, criticized Florida’s “Stand Your Ground” self-defense law in a speech Tuesday before the NAACP.

The law was not invoked by Zimmerman’s defense team but was included in instructions to the jury.

“We must confront the underlying attitudes, the mistaken beliefs and the unfortunate stereotypes that serve too often as the basis for police action and private judgments. Separate and apart from the case that has drawn the nation’s attention, it’s time to question laws that senselessly expand the concept of self-defense and sow dangerous conflict in our neighborhood,” Holder said to applause in his speech before the NAACP Tuesday.

“These laws try to fix something that was never broken. There has always been a legal defense for using deadly force if — and the ‘if’ is important — if no safe retreat is available. But we must examine laws that take this further by eliminating the common-sense and age-old requirement that people who feel threatened have a duty to retreat, outside their home, if they can do so safely. By allowing and perhaps encouraging violent situations to escalate in public, such laws undermine public safety,” Holder said.

“The list of resulting tragedies is long and, unfortunately, has victimized too many who are innocent. It is our collective obligation; we must stand OUR ground to ensure — (cheers, applause, music) — we must stand our ground to ensure that our laws reduce violence, and take a hard look at laws that contribute to more violence than they prevent,” Holder said.

But approximately one third of Florida “Stand Your Ground” claims in fatal cases have been made by black defendants, and they have used the defense successfully 55 percent of the time, at the same rate as the population at large and at a higher rate than white defendants, according to a Daily Caller analysis of a database maintained by the Tampa Bay Times.  Additionally, the majority of victims in Florida “Stand Your Ground” cases have been white.

African Americans used “Stand Your Ground” defenses at nearly twice the rate of their presence in the Florida population, which was listed at 16.6 percent in 2012.
